Native bees and bumblebees need all our support. They work harder, longer hours than imported honeybees, and they begin the gathering season earlier and later into the fall. They harvest pollen in harsher weather conditions. They are also important pollinators for the more challenging legume flowers like alfalfa. Over 400 species of native bees call Ontario their home.
In this piece, our most common native bumblebee hovers over her ground nest. She's overwintered successfully, found a suitable spot, laid down reserves and begun her brood. She will care for them until they are ready to help.
