The Tree of Sky
by Jennifer Dunlop
All the important things catch
in trees. Rain strokes, breath. Meteors
turning on new twigs. Twisted
tips of an oak pin
fog on a surging moon.
I glimpse stars climb down the tree
of sky, cast lacy light, curious
about earth. Fascinated by weighty
ground, cartwheeling
through gravity’s haze.
I have spent much of my life
turning pages of forests, assimilating
plotlines of stars. Taking in
a vista assembling exhalations
the piercings of life opening
us, as trees are,
to the sky.
