Flowering Dogwood

$0.00

36×29” wall hanging from my 2002-4 touring exhibition, Saving Paradise.

Eastern Flowering Dogwood - Cornus florida

It is impossible not to adore this beautiful large Carolinian shrub, from spring to fall a pleasure to behold. As a landscape plant is is well loved by gardeners, but its susceptibility to a debilitaing blight is making it a rare sight even in natural settings.

Although it is best known for its glorious white spring blossoms, I chose autumn for this piece. Its intense blood red foliage and fruit are show stoppers. Indigenous tribes made a decoction from stems and roots to use as a heart medicine, hence the heart beneath the surface.
