Kallpa Warmi

$0.00

13×13" shadow box with gallery glass

Kallpa Warmi: women's strength

  • Language: Quechua

  • Region: Ayacucho, Peruvian Andes

In the video that accompanies this word, Violeta Quispe and her mother talk about the significance of ‘Kallpa warmi’, or women's strength, in the transmission of their traditional Andean legacy. Together they are preserving elements of their Quechua culture in the face of discrimination and oppression. The Pelican feather portrayed here is a traditional art tool for creating coloured panels that tell stories both ancestral and current. They are also reviving the arts of embroidery, sewing, weaving and songs.
